Our history
The building

Duquesa de Cardona Luxury Boutique Hotel is located in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, in a building that belonged to the Dukes of Cardona in the 16th century. The building was later restored in 1850 as a residence for Barcelona's bourgeoisie, in an eclectic, neoclassical style.
At that time, the main entrance was located at what is now the rear of the former stable block on Carrer de la Mercè. On the rear façade, the year of the renovation can be seen in wrought iron, as well as various female bust sculptures. Following the removal of the sea wall and the opening of Passeig de Colom, the main façade is now overlooking the sea.

The Cardona Dynasty

The Cardona Dynasty, dating back ten centuries, was one of the most important and influential lineages of the nobility, both nationally and internationally. There is a tapestry that shows a meeting between King Philip IV of Spain and Louis XIV of France in 1660, at which the then Duke of Cardona was present.
An example of the wealth of this lineage is the majestic castle that can be visited in Cardona, 90 km from Barcelona, which was one of the most powerful fortresses during the Middle Ages and until 1714. In 2003, the current Duchess of Cardona, Casilda Ghisla Guerrero-Burgos y Fernández de Córdoba, visited Barcelona and gave her name to our hotel.

The Sea Wall

The sea wall, built in the 15th century, became a favourite place for a stroll for the Barcelona bourgeoisie in the 19th century. However, as it had lost its defensive function, it was demolished between 1878 and 1881 in order to extend the Port of Barcelona to include the Barceloneta neighbourhood, which was outside the wall.

Passeig de Colom

Once the sea wall had been demolished, work began on the development of Passeig de Colom, with the aim of providing Barcelona with a stately promenade for the Universal Exhibition of 1888, the year in which it was officially inaugurated. At one end of the promenade, the monument to Christopher Columbus was constructed and, at the other, the beautiful but ephemeral Hotel Internacional, the work of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.
Our hotel is located at number 12 Passeig de Colom, just a few steps away from the building at number 2, where the writer Miguel de Cervantes lived during his visit to Barcelona, the exact date of which is unknown.
